Expressive Art Therapy Summer Institute 2014
The Prescott College Expressive Art Therapy Summer Institute brings masters in the fields of Expressive Art, Music, Dance Movement, and Art Therapy together with students and professionals for an unparalleled, intensive learning experience. Participants gain experiential knowledge of theories, applications, techniques, and methods.
The internationally attended Institute is the core foundation for students in the Expressive Art Therapy program at Prescott College. The Institute also provides opportunities for those who want to learn more about the field of Expressive Art Therapy to gain first-hand knowledge and experience. Participants gain knowledge and skills in applying Expressive Arts in work, educational, and community settings. All practitioners and interested community members are welcome.

As we open the Institute we will come together as a community to build the foundation for what is to come.
Intentional Embodiment: Holding Self Through Clay, Silence, and the Studio Sanctuary– Michael Franklin – July 28, 10 a.m. – 5p.m. & July 29– 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.
Visual images, when created out of truthful personal narratives within a community setting, support inner and outer transformation at the deepest of levels. This 2-day workshop will address the art studio as both body and intentional environment where contemplative inquiry into any question or subject is possible. Since the artistic quest gives form to personal feelings, group relationships, and spiritual seeking, collective transformation becomes possible within artistic communities. Using clay, workshop participants will explore the contemplative studio practices of embodiment, silence, intention, attention, and self-reflective witnessing. In addition, students will take away a greater appreciation for how visual art can serve as a form of contemplative practice and cultural intervention.
Somatic Re-Sourcing: Nature, Art, and Mindful Movement– Liz Faller – July 30-31, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The focus of this workshop is to foster and access our inner resources and sense of wholeness-through somatic awareness, movement, and expressive arts. With nature as our primary guide, we will engage with our bodies as the foundation of how we perceive experience and interact. Tools will include: mindfulness and loving kindness practices, movement meditation and improvisation, relaxation, and kinesthetic empathy. We will play with a balance of structure and freedom, design and spontaneity.
This is Your Brain on Wholehearted Living: Courage, Compassion, Connection and Creativity – Camille Smith– August 1-3, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday & 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
During the 3 day workshop we will synthesize the wisdom of Brene Brown (The Gifts of Imperfection) and Rick Hanson, ( Buddha’s Brain and Hardwiring Happiness). Using creative and contemplative methods we will practice instilling the attitudes which contribute to a life filled with meaning and joy. With the power of intention and mindfully focused attention as resources we will explore methods for rewiring our brains for positive change and overall well being. The role of gratitude and compassion will figure prominently as we cultivate curiosity and wonder and engage in sacred play in a multi-modal expressive arts field. Applications for work with clients will be explored.

Altered Books – Kat Kirby – August 4, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
An Altered Book is a piece of mixed media artwork featuring an old book that has had new life breathed into it. Participants in this workshop will cut, tear, glue, paint, collage, stamp, fold and adorn the pages in whatever direction your imagination takes you. Choose from a variety of old books (or bring your own, with sewn pages, rather than glued), and begin to create something unique. You might use some of the text already there, or cover it up with gesso and start over. You might follow a theme or topic or work randomly and without a plan. Altered books are a great way to begin a new creative journal, as that “staring at a blank page” is not an issue! Bring along any images or items you might want to include in your precious project.
The Integrating the Power of Music and Sound – Anne Parker – August 5-6, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Music and sound speak directly to the soul and spirit as well as having immediate effects on the mind/body and emotions. Music is a natural and primal form of expression for people of all abilities, ages, and cultures. We will explore the therapeutic use of music and sound through music-making and music-listening using voice, instruments, and recorded music. Students will learn will about the effects of sound and music on the body and brain as well as basic skills to engage clients in therapeutic music expression and activity. Applications for various client populations and integrating music and sound into other arts therapy modalities will also be explored.
The Householder’s Path to a Creative Life– Cathy Malchiodi – August 7 – 9, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday and Friday & 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday
One of the most difficult challenges for expressive arts therapists is to maintain an art making practice without giving up family or work obligations. In order to bring the transformational aspects of the creative process to others, each of us has to find a way to stay connected to artistic expression for our own health and well-being. For most of us, that is the “householder’s path,” a middle path that allows both authenticity and a full life. In this short course we will consider the householder’s path by first explore self-soothing and play through spontaneous art making and the Expressive Therapies Continuum as sources of reconnection to creative arts in our own lives and the lives of those we see in our work. Next we will examine self-connection as a personal renewal through visual/art journaling and creating various containers for a visual journaling practice. On the final day, we will experience the importance of connection to others as inspiration for art making and how our creative connections to others are essential to maintaining and sustaining our own creative life.

As we bring the Institute to a close, the rich learning, the development of skills, the inspiration leading to action, is integrated. Conscious cultivation of gratitude will inform our reflection and integration of the many gifts received throughout the Institute. Using a variety of creative modalities, we will honor the individual and collective experience of Institute participants and ground the learning for personal and professional practice in the future.
Camille Smith, LPC, ATR-BC, is a graduate of Lesley University. Camille is a licensed professional counselor and Board Certified, Registered Art Therapist. Much of her work has focused on development of open studio programs for adults who experience psychiatric issues. Camille is the former Clinical Director of PSA/Art Awakenings, an open studio and gallery-based program in Phoenix that uses creative expression as the empowering component in recovery. A practicing art therapist since 1990, Camille has taught undergraduate and graduate level Art Therapy since 1998 for Arizona State University, South Mountain Community College, and Prescott College respectively. Camille is now in her 7th year as the Associate Faculty for the Prescott College Expressive Art Therapy program and Director of the Expressive Art Therapy Summer Institute. Camille devotes her time to teaching, speaking, and consulting about the use of creative expression in healing and transformation.
Michael A. Franklin, PhD, ATR-BC, is the director of the graduate art therapy program at Naropa University. For over 30 years, Michael has practiced and taught in various academic and clinical settings. The author of numerous articles, he is an international lecturer and founder of the Naropa Community Art Studio, a project researching service as a spiritual practice by training socially engaged artists to serve marginalized community members through the studio-arts. His research interests focus on integrating art, meditation, and yoga philosophy.
Liz Faller, M.A. Dance and Transformation. Certified Hypnotherapist. Dance and Human Development faculty for Prescott College, Liz has devoted her life to the creative awakening of humankind. Her interdisciplinary playfulness, with an emphasis on embodied mindfulness and diversity, includes: nature, meditation, improvisation, yoga, ritual, performance, expressive arts and experiential education. Her approach is loving, inclusive, and spirited.
Kat Kirby, M.Ed, ATR, is an artist and SoulCollage® Facilitator and Trainer, with a Bachelor of Arts from Kean University and an M.Ed in Art Therapy from Lesley University. She works with individuals and groups in addiction and eating disorder recovery programs and with children facing adversity, offering a variety of art materials for self-expression and exploration.
Anne B. Parker, MA, MHSA, MT-BC has been a professional music therapist since 1977. She holds degrees in music therapy, counseling psychology, and health services administration and completed a post-graduate fellowship in music-centered psychotherapy. She has also completed post-graduate studies in expressive arts therapies and sound healing. Anne has professional experience in general, rehabilitation, and psychiatric hospitals as well as addiction treatment and cancer recovery programs. Since 1994, Anne’s practice has focused in the areas of wellness, living well with chronic illness, and psychospiritual growth. In 2010, Anne was a featured presenter in the Music and Brain series at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. She is currently a Wellness Counselor and Supervisor of the Wellness Department at Miraval Resort in Tucson.
Cathy A. Malchiodi, PhD, LPCC, LPAT, ATR-BC, is the founder and director of the Trauma-Informed Practices and Expressive Arts Therapy Institute and President, Art Therapy Without Borders, Inc. Cathy is a licensed professional art therapist, mental health counselor and research psychologist with more than 25 years of experience in arts-based trauma intervention, medical art therapy and integrative approaches to health and wellness. She is the author and/or editor of 15 books on art therapy, expressive arts therapy, trauma-informed practice, and health care, including the Handbook of Art Therapy (2nd ed), Understanding Children's Drawings, Creative Interventions with Traumatized Children, The Art Therapy Sourcebook, and Art Therapy and Health Care, among others. Cathy works in mixed media and altered art and has an ongoing fascination with social media and digital art forms.

• A light breakfast is provided each morning from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Your cooperation in being ready to start promptly as scheduled is appreciated. In addition to breakfast, lunches are provided on site each day of the Institute. Lunch will generally be from noon to 1 p.m.
• Vegetarian and omnivore options are available each day – vegan, gluten-free, and light-allergy options require an additional fee of $5 per day. State special dietary needs on registration form and pay extra fee if requests require it.
• There will be a $25 charge for those participants who desire clock hour certificates for their learning at the Institute, payable with registration.
• Scholarships may be available for continuing students in good academic standing enrolled in Prescott College Master of Arts Program EAT Concentration. The deadline to apply is May 10, 2014.
